Germany Calls the Civilian Casualties in Gaza "Extremely Concerning

BERLIN: Since Israel resumed its full-scale military offensive on the occupied Palestinian territory, Germany stated Monday that the increase of civilian deaths in the Gaza Strip is a serious concern.

Israel broke the relative calm of a six-week truce agreement with Hamas, which controls Gaza, on Tuesday by resuming heavy airstrikes across the heavily populated Strip, followed by ground operations. The ceasefire extension talks have come to a standstill. Hamas has resisted attempts by Israel and the US to alter the ceasefire agreement, claiming that doing so would be against the provisions of the pact that all parties signed.

Christian Wagner, a spokesperson for the German foreign ministry, stated in Berlin that “it is now very clear that we must quickly return to negotiations and to the ceasefire that was in place.

He stated that “the humanitarian situation is once again catastrophic” and that Israel’s continued military operations will not result in the release of the remaining Israeli hostages in Gaza.

Berlin, which has historically been a strong supporter of Israel, also denounced the “unacceptable statements” made by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz last week, in which he threatened to seize portions of Gaza unless Hamas freed the remaining Israeli hostages.
