A tanker reported an exterior explosion on the vessel’s port side, close to the waterline, approximately sixty nautical miles off the coast of Muscat, the capital of Oman, according to United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, which made the announcement on Tuesday in Dubai.
Although the tanker reported that some bunker fuel had been released into the sea, the United Kingdom Maritime Terminals Authority (UKMTO) stated that the vessel, which was identified as the Olympic Life, and her crew were safe. The cause of the incident was not known, according to the statement.
MarineTraffic’s vessel monitoring data indicates that the Very Large Crude Carrier, which is owned by Greeks, was sailing by Muscat at approximately 7:00 GMT, headed out of the Gulf of Oman, and was not carrying any cargo at the time.
According to the Onassis Foundation’s website, the yacht is owned by Olympic Shipping & Management, based in Athens. This company is the successor of Olympic Management, which was established by the late billionaire shipping mogul Aristotle Onassis. There was no quick response from the corporation to the request for comment.
