Saudi Arabia Deploys Drones to Safeguard Millions of Hajj Pilgrims

Saudi medical professionals are depending more and more on drones to serve a wide range of medical facilities treating pilgrims who are experiencing heat stress during the Hajj, as temperatures in Mecca reached 45°C this week.

For generations, the Hajj rituals have remained consistent. However, with AI, UAVs, and smartphone apps offering vital services, logistical assistance, and aiding in the management of the enormous crowds, technology is drastically altering the experience for both pilgrims and officials. Drones in particular have proven to be a technical solution for keeping the 127 clinics located across Mecca, Mina, and Arafat sufficiently stocked, as opposed to depending on clogged roadways crowded with more than 1.5 million pilgrims.

“The primary objective is to offer prompt service to God’s guests during the season,” National Unified Procurement Company (NUPCO) chief operating officer Fahd Al-Bathi told AFP. Nine months ago, preparations were made for the medical requirements of the Hajj season. “Our staff have to make sure we get to patients as soon as we can. With these incredibly big crowds, this is a critical component,” he continued.
