Remittances played a major role in defining the financial link between Gulf-based Indians and their home country for decades. However, an increasing number of wealthy non-resident Indians (NRIs) in the United Arab Emirates and the larger Gulf are becoming global wealth creators with assets spanning several nations, asset classes, and currencies, rather than just being simple income earners and money senders.
According to Pranav Mishra, Head of Distribution, Consumer Bank at Kotak Mahindra Bank, the Gulf Indian investor profile has evolved dramatically in recent years due to the diaspora’s increased talent, mobility, and financial sophistication.
An earlier generation of Gulf Indians worked here and remitted money back home. That individual is still alive. However, suddenly seated next to them is a wealthier, more knowledgeable, and internationally connected person whose financial life spans the UAE, India, and frequently a third market, Mishra told Khaleej Times.
The trend is indicative of more general shifts in Indian expatriate movement patterns and wealth growth. Many Gulf-based professionals are now creating long-term portfolios that incorporate investments in India, the UAE, and other markets rather than concentrating only on helping their relatives back home.
