Indonesia's President Claims that Dutch Colonial rule Cost the Country $31 Trillion

JAKARTA: During its more than 300-year colonial dominance over the area, the Netherlands embezzled up to $31 trillion in riches from Indonesia, according to remarks made by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday. After centuries of Dutch colonial domination that started at the end of the 16th century, Indonesia declared its independence in 1945.

When nutmeg, cloves, and pepper were considered the most costly and opulent spices in Europe, the Dutch East India Company gained a virtual monopoly on the world spice trade because the archipelago was its main supply of spices. The Netherlands became one of the richest European powers in the 17th century as a result of its enormous earnings.

In a speech at the opening of a defence exhibition in Jakarta, Prabowo emphasised the effects of Indonesia’s colonisation. There was only one study a few weeks ago that claims the Netherlands stole $31 trillion of our wealth during the time of Dutch colonisation,” he stated, without citing the study in question.

“The Netherlands had the highest GDP per capita in the world during the Dutch occupation of Indonesia. According to history, our GDP may have been among the greatest in the world if we had been able to safeguard our wealth.
