Israeli Strike on Southern Gaza Kills Seventy-One, with the Head of Hamas' Military Arm Reportedly Among the Targets

71 people were killed in an Israeli hit at the Al-Mawasi camp for war displaced people in the southern Palestinian enclave on Saturday, according to the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza.

After ordering inhabitants to evacuate other parts of the Gaza Strip, Israel declared Al-Mawasi, which is close to Khan Yunis, to be one of the safe zones.
Referring to Israel, the ministry denounced what it described as a “brutal massacre by the occupation.” According to reports, there were at least 289 injuries and 71 fatalities, with more victims still unaccounted for.

After the claimed bombing, the Israeli military confirmed it was investigating.

Casualties were rushed by ambulance fleets to several neighboring clinics, the Kuwaiti field hospital in Rafah, and the Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis.

The continued shelling in Gaza, according to the civil defense organization, has made it impossible for its teams to reach the victims within the tent city where tens of thousands have taken sanctuary.

Civil defense official Mahmud Bassal stated, “There are still many bodies of martyrs scattered in the streets, under the rubble, and around the displaced people’s tents that cannot be reached due to the heavy shelling of the occupation (Israeli army) that targeted places and tents in the in Al-Mawasi.”

In reaction to the Hamas strikes on October 7, Israel proclaimed al-Mawasi a safe zone while it continued its military offensive in other areas of the Gaza Strip.
