In his inauguration address, newly elected President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon signaled a new era for the nation by calling for a comprehensive military strategy to stave off Israeli attacks and for communication with Syria, its neighbor.
The Lebanese parliament chose Joseph Aoun, a former Commander-in-Chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces, on Thursday, bringing an end to more than two years of political impasse since Michel Aoun resigned in October 2022.
President Aoun stressed the value of maintaining national unity and the state’s sole jurisdiction over defense issues in his speech to the legislature. I invite all parties to discuss a comprehensive defense policy that enables the state to end the Israeli occupation and repel its aggression,” he stated.
He promised to reconstruct the Bekaa Valley, southern Lebanon, and the southern suburbs of Beirut all places decimated by Israeli bombardment. He said, “As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, I reaffirm the state’s exclusive right to bear arms,” reaffirming his dedication to state power.
Speaking about Lebanon’s relationship with Syria, Aoun emphasized the value of developing positive bilateral relations. He stated that we have the opportunity to begin a serious dialogue with the Syrian state and establish relations based on mutual respect and sovereignty.
