Kyiv on Alert After Russia Warns of Potential Military Strike

MOSCOW: Russia warned foreign ambassadors in Kyiv on Wednesday that if Ukraine interfered with this weekend’s World War II celebrations in Moscow, it would assault the city. Ukraine did not react right away, and Russia did not provide further details about its threat.

Every year on May 9, Russia celebrates World War II Victory Day with a sizable military procession through Red Square. To align with the celebrations, the nation announced earlier this week a unilateral ceasefire with Ukraine for May 8 and 9.

Russia threatened to launch a “retaliatory strike” on the Ukrainian capital, “including against decision-making centers,” if Ukraine interfered with the celebrations this Saturday in a letter to international organizations and foreign diplomatic missions.

They were asked to “ensure the timely evacuation of personnel from diplomatic and other missions, as well as citizens, from the city of Kyiv.” Ukraine did not respond right away. Russia’s desire for a ceasefire on May 9, a significant festival for Russian President Vladimir Putin, has drawn criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. On Monday, Zelensky hinted that Moscow feared Ukrainian drones might “buzz over Red Square.
