Launch of a Unified Database of Official Government Regulations Regarding the Arabic Language

RIYADH: On Monday, a new unified database of 22 countries’ official government policy regarding the Arabic language was introduced. The Language Policy System Project in Arab States was initiated at ALECSO’s headquarters in Tunis by the King Salman International Academy for the Arabic Language of Saudi Arabia in collaboration with the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organisation.

With the goal of creating a resource that helps scholars, researchers, decision-makers, and professionals to carry out strategic linguistic work, the system has collected language policy data from 22 Arab states. The Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science collaborated on the project’s development.

A wide spectrum of linguistic professionals, institutions, and language planning specialists attended the launch ceremony. More than fifty people attended, including secretary of national committees and officials of Arab states involved in the organisation.

According to Mahmoud Al-Mahmoud, head of KSGAAL’s Planning and Language Policy Sector, the partnership between KSGAAL and ALECSO is essential to furthering efforts to advance the Arabic language, preserve its integrity, and highlight its deep cultural value.

The project’s compilation of over 1,800 language policies from 22 Arab nations is one of its most notable features. Additionally, the project connects these policies to different areas of language planning, which significantly raises the initiative’s overall worth, Al-Mahmoud continued.
