To immediately address drought-related difficulties, Dr. Ayman Ghulam, CEO of the Saudi National Centre for Meteorology (NCM), stressed the exceptional potential to share insights, exchange ideas, and establish strong connections. The Saudi team under his leadership is attending the Drought Resilience Conference, which got underway in Geneva on Monday and ends on Wednesday.
“The International Drought Resilience Observatory Unveiled: Revolutionising Global Drought Resilience” was the subject of a conference session that Dr. Ghulam chaired. The NCM chief kindly invited the world’s scientific community to attend the future COP16 in Riyadh, which is set for December 3–13, 2024, during his remarks.
According to Dr. Ghulam, the Riyadh event will highlight the critical need for increased international efforts to address land degradation and drought, as well as related social, environmental, and economic impacts. He highlighted the role of the International Drought Resilience Alliance (IDRA) as a key partner for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP16.
During this historic occasion, which is anticipated to be the biggest and most inclusive assembly of the 197 UNCCD Parties to date, Dr. Ghulam also advises the minister. Saudi Arabia has suggested two drought-related initiatives for COP16 at the Geneva conference: the WMO International Initiative for Early Warning of Dust and Sandstorms and the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership.
