According to the Saudi Green Initiative and Vision 2030 plan, the Kingdom is on schedule to grow 100 million mangrove plants by 2030.
According to a status report from the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification, which the Saudi Press Agency quoted recently, some 13 million mangrove seedlings have been planted since the start of the massive coastal forest-cover program a year ago.
Currently, the majority of the NCVC-reported initiatives are being implemented along the Red Sea coast of the Kingdom; Jazan province, with 5.5 million seedlings, is at the top of the list. Provinces of Makkah (2.4 million), Madinah (2 million), Tabuk (1.5 million), and Asir (1 million) were the next in line.
The report states that the Eastern Province has planted 500,000 saplings along the Arabian Gulf shore.
Nonetheless, the institute announced that 700,000 seedlings had already been planted prior to the project’s official start along the Arabian Gulf. This includes 500,000 in the governorate of Al-Wajh and 200,000 on Ras Abu Ali Island in the Jubail governorate.
According to the SPA, “the project involves fencing and tending to the seedlings, to protect them from algae and seaweed, as well as safeguarding the sites from grazing and encroachment.”
