Saudia Addresses Reports Linking Former Boeing Aircraft to Sanctions Concerns

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s national carrier Saudia on Saturday tried to clarify claims circulating in the media and on social media regarding the transfer of Boeing 777-200 aircraft it formerly owned to an airline that is subject to international sanctions.

In a statement released on the social media platform X, the airline stated the aircraft were sold on June 7, 2023, to a firm registered outside Saudi Arabia and that the transaction was carried out in conformity with all required commercial and legal procedures.

“Since the completion of the sale, Saudia has had no operational or commercial relationship with the aircraft,” the airline added, without identifying the buyer or providing any details. The declaration came after reports and internet posts linked the former Saudia aircraft to a sanctioned carrier, causing the airline to formally dissociate itself from any subsequent usage or operation of the planes. Saudia, originally known as Saudi Arabian Airlines, was founded in September 1945 and is the Kingdom’s oldest airline. The carrier presently has a fleet of roughly 149 passenger aircraft, according to its website.
