For The Second Time in a week, an Aircraft from Saudi Arabia is Diverted to Indonesia due to a False Bomb Threat

RIYADH: After receiving a bomb threat, a Saudia Airlines flight that was returning hundreds of Hajj pilgrims from the Middle East to Indonesia was reportedly diverted on Saturday. This is the second Saudia flight-related problem in a week. Flight SV5688 was planned to land at Surabaya on the island of Java while travelling from Jeddah to Indonesia, with a stopover in Muscat.

The flight was diverted to Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, North Sumatra, on Saturday morning after air traffic controllers in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, got a call warning them of a bomb threat on board, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

Asri Santosa, the chairman of the regional airport authority, said in a statement that although the airport was still fully operating, officials were checking the planes as they arrived.

According to a North Sumatra police official, all 376 passengers, 13 crew members, and Javan Hajj pilgrims were said to be safe. On Sunday, it is anticipated that the passengers would resume their journey.

Saudi Arabia acknowledged the security threat was ultimately determined to be untrue when Arab News asked for response. As a precautionary measure, Saudia diverted flight SV5688 operating to Surabaya to Kualanamu International Airport in Indonesia in strict accordance with safety protocols,” the airline stated.
