The Function of Palms in Ancient Societies is Examined in a Riyadh Exhibition

RIYADH: The palm tree’s historical significance across ancient societies is highlighted in the “Palm Tree in Civilizations” pavilion at the International Dates Conference and Exhibition in Riyadh, which runs through November 28. The pavilion provides a historical trip through the ages, examining the ways in which date palms sustained food and economic sustainability. Through carvings and paintings that illustrate the palm’s significance in daily life, religious rites, agriculture, building, and fertility activities, it also highlights the palm’s significance in ancient Egypt.

The exhibit, which is organized by the National Center for Palm and Dates and has as its theme “World of Dates,” also emphasizes the importance of the palm in Mesopotamia and the Levant. It includes carvings that depict their role in trade and society as well as ancient documents like the Code of Hammurabi that protected palm cultivation.

Ancient Arab societies’ reliance on palms for trade and cultivation was demonstrated by artifacts from the Dilmun civilization. With representations from historical locations like Palmyra, the pavilion also highlights the palm’s symbolic significance in religious and artistic traditions throughout the Levant, especially among the Canaanites and Arameans.

In addition to offering food, medicine, and shade, the palm represents pride and belonging, as seen by its inclusion on Saudi Arabia’s national emblem, according to Saad Alnajim, vice president of the Antiquities and Heritage Association in the Eastern Province.
