What the Latest Iran Attacks Mean for Middle East Stability

TEHRAN: As Washington and Tehran squared up over the Strait of Hormuz, making conflicting claims about whether the crucial waterway was open to traffic, fresh strikes shook Iran on Sunday night. Two of Iran’s southern islands were hit, according to reports.

The strikes occurred just hours after Tehran and Washington engaged in gunfire for the third time this week, with control of Hormuz once more being the main point of contention. This led to more doubts about talks intended to build on a preliminary agreement and put an end to the Middle East conflict permanently.

There was open transit through Hormuz prior to the war’s start on February 28 with unexpected US-Israeli assaults against Iran, but Tehran currently maintains that it will control the strait, despite Washington’s insistence that it cannot.

An Iranian strike on a commercial ship in the river, whose crew was forced to flee after it caught fire, set off the exchanges earlier in the day. According to state news agency IRNA, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards declared following the event that “the Strait of Hormuz will be closed until further notice and until the end of American interventions in this region.”

On X, the US military’s Central Command retorted that the strait was “open to all vessels seeking to lawfully transit. It added, “Iran does not control the strait,” and stated that US forces were “positioned and prepared to ensure” freedom of navigation. There is a lot of traffic.
