Why Luigi Mangione’s Lawyers Dropped the Psychiatric Defense Strategy

Why Luigi Mangione’s Lawyers Dropped the Psychiatric Defense Strategy

NEW YORK: Luigi Mangione’s attorneys shockingly informed a judge on Thursday that he will no longer raise a mental defense in his state murder trial for the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The statement was made just one day after Mangione’s attorneys informed Judge Gregory Carro that they intended to present a defense based on allegations that the 28-year-old Ivy League graduate was experiencing severe emotional distress at the time of the killing on December 4, 2024.

A representative for Mangione’s legal team received a message requesting comment. The state case is being prosecuted by the Manhattan district attorney’s office, but they declined to comment. On Thursday, Mangione’s attorneys had to present prosecutors with evidence to back up the emotional disturbance allegation.

Citing the defense’s decision, Carro reversed his order to unseal a transcript and other materials from a secret hearing on the subject on June 3. However, by the time he made this decision, copies of the transcript had already been sent to at least some news media members.
