Benedict Cumberbatch, a British actor, delighted a crowded audience with a “In Conversation” session on Tuesday afternoon at Jeddah’s Red Sea International Film Festival. As the two-time Academy Award candidate talked about his profession and recounted growing up with actor parents, fans packed the Culture Square auditorium in Al-Balad. “I was with my parents wherever they went and whatever they did, and I learnt from them since they are both actors. Regarding Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, he remarked, “My father encouraged me to pursue my passion.”
Subsequently, he shared experiences from the sets of some of his greatest hits, such as Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” the critically acclaimed television shows “Sherlock,” “Star Trek into Darkness,” “The Power of the Dog,” and “The Imitation Game.” “I’ve had a wonderful journey and have relished every second of it,” he remarked. “I’m always searching for new challenges and experiences to use my creativity and craft.”
Cumberbatch has received two Academy Award nominations: one for “The Imitation Game” in 2014 and another for “The Power of the Dog” in 2021. Though he acknowledged the industry recognition, he stated, “It’s nice to be nominated, but for me, it’s just about the quality of the work; the value for me is that it brings me into close contact with my collaborators and with the people whose shoulders I’m standing on or have stood on.”
Cumberbatch has experience in radio, film, television, and theater. He responded, “Oh yes, that’s the real thing,” when asked if he had missed treading the boards. My career began there, and theater marked a turning point in my life.
