As concerns about the viability of the Russian-proposed peace negotiations in Istanbul grow, Russian forces unleashed a major wave of drone and missile assaults across Ukraine early Saturday, killing at least two people, including a 9-year-old girl, and wounding several more.
Overnight, Russian soldiers launched five missiles and 109 drones, according to Ukraine’s air force. Of those, thirty drones missed their objectives, while forty-two drones and three missiles were intercepted.
Governor Ivan Fedorov said that an attack on the village of Dolynka in the Zaporizhzhia district killed a small child and injured a 16-year-old. “The blast damaged several nearby homes and vehicles, and one house was destroyed,” he added.
Moscow, meanwhile, announced that its forces had taken control of the towns of Novopil in Donetsk and Vodolahy in the Sumy area, marking fresh territorial advances in eastern and northern Ukraine. In retaliation, the Ukrainian military issued further orders for the obligatory evacuation of 11 communities in Sumy, increasing the total to 213.
About 50,000 Russian troops have gathered in the border area, maybe in anticipation of a new attack intended to create a buffer zone, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
According to Ukrainian military leader Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, Russia’s primary efforts are currently focused in Pokrovsk, Torets, Lyman, and Sumy. Additionally, he asserted—a claim Moscow disputes that Ukrainian forces are still occupying territory in the Kursk area of Russia.
