Netanyahu Criticizes Macron and Albanese: What Sparked the Clash?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused French President Emmanuel Macron of stoking “the anti-Semitic fire” in France by preparing to recognize Palestinian independence, sparking a diplomatic spat between Israel and Paris.

According to a letter seen by the AFP news agency on Tuesday, which contained Netanyahu’s accusation against the French leader, anti-Semitism has “surged” in France since President Macron recently declared that he will recognize Palestine as a state at a UN General Assembly meeting next month.

On Tuesday, the French president’s administration promptly retaliated against Netanyahu, describing his accusations as “abject” and “erroneous” and vowing that they “will not go unanswered.”

France “protects and will always protect its Jewish citizens,” the French presidency declared, adding that “this is a time for seriousness and responsibility, not for conflation and manipulation.” It declared, “Violence against the [French] Jewish community is unacceptable.”

French deputy minister for European affairs Benjamin Haddad responded to Netanyahu’s letter by stating that France had “no lessons to learn in the fight against anti-Semitism.
