If an agreement is reached to halt Russia’s war in Ukraine, US President Donald Trump has ruled out sending US troops to ensure its security.
Trump responded, “You have my assurance, and I am president,” when asked what guarantees he could offer that US forces would not be sent to defend Ukraine’s borders in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday. All I’m attempting to do is prevent deaths.
Later, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reaffirmed that Washington would help with “coordination” and “perhaps provide other means of security guarantees,” but that US troops would not be included in any peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv.
Trump’s remarks were made the day after he hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders at the White House as part of his most recent efforts to end the conflict, which has lasted for three and a half years.
The subject of how to guarantee Ukraine’s post-war security continues to be a significant area of contention in the war-ending negotiations, despite Zelenskyy and European leaders portraying Monday’s meeting as constructive and encouraging.
