RIYADH: To “discuss just solutions to the southern cause,” factions in south Yemen have been invited by Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry to meet in Riyadh. Rashad Al-Alimi, President of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, had requested the conference in the Saudi capital, according to the ministry statement. The Kingdom encouraged all factions to attend “to develop a comprehensive vision” that would fulfill the aspirations of the southern people.
The governorates of Hadramaut and Al-Mahra have lately seen territory taken by the separatist Southern Transitional Council. According to Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom’s national security and regional stability are directly threatened by the STC move.
A consignment of trucks and weaponry intended for southern separatist militants was the target of bombings earlier this week by the military coalition backing Yemen’s government. Two vessels carried the shipment to the port of Al-Mukalla.
Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed that discussion is the only way to resolve the southern issue. On Tuesday, Gulf and Arab nations declared their support for Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
