Two People Injured After US Border Agent Shooting in Portland

Authorities in Portland, Oregon, reported on Thursday that a US immigration agent had shot and injured a man and a woman. Given the public outcry following the ICE shooting death of a Minnesota woman the day before, local officials called for calm.

In a statement, Portland police chief Bob Day said, “We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more. According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security, the Portland shooting happened on Thursday afternoon as US Border Patrol agents were making a targeted vehicle stop.

The driver, a suspected member of a Venezuelan gang, allegedly tried to “weaponize” his car and run over the agents, according to the statement. The driver and a passenger fled after “an agent fired a defensive shot,” according to DHS.

According to Portland police, the incident happened close to an eastern Portland medical clinic. Police were notified that two individuals with gunshot wounds, a man and a woman, were seeking assistance at a site approximately two miles (3 km) northeast of the medical clinic six minutes after they arrived on the scene and concluded that federal agents were engaged in the incident.
