Trump Announces Move to Cancel Citizenship of Naturalized Migrants Involved in Fraud

President Donald Trump of the United States declared on Tuesday that naturalized foreigners found guilty of defrauding American citizens would have their citizenship revoked. During a speech at the Detroit Economic Club, Trump declared, “We’re also going to revoke the citizenship of any naturalized immigrant from Somalia or anywhere else who is convicted of defrauding our citizens.”

While stating that the policy would apply to naturalized nationals of any nation who are found guilty of fraud, the president particularly highlighted Somalia in his speech. The crackdown was prompted by a right-wing influencer’s unfounded allegations that Somali citizens of Minneapolis were involved in widespread fraud involving publicly funded daycare facilities. Trump has stopped federal child care subsidies to five Democratic-led states despite ongoing investigations into the allegations.

Following lawsuits from the states of California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York, a federal judge last Friday issued an injunction suspending Trump’s decision. Although data indicate that immigrants are significantly less likely to commit crimes than native-born people, Trump has used the existence of “migrant crime waves” as an excuse for deportations and crackdowns.
