RAMALLAH: Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, stated on Thursday that Palestine is committed to carrying out its initiatives with US President Donald Trump and other pertinent partners.
Citing encouraging signs from the US administration, he expressed hope that the Palestinian cause would be resolved in 2026. He was giving a speech at a ceremony when the Arab American University in Ramallah awarded him an honorary degree. According to Abbas, the state of Palestine has declared its support for the establishment of the Palestinian Administrative Committee in the Gaza Strip during the period of transition. He thanked Trump and the mediators Egypt, Qatar, and Turkiye for their work in advancing the second phase of Trump’s plan.
Abbas reiterated the importance of connecting the PA’s institutions in the West Bank and Gaza, emphasizing the need to avoid the development of rival legal, administrative, or security frameworks that would deepen division.
The Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and return, as well as the creation of an independent, fully sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital that coexists peacefully and securely with its neighbors, were the cornerstones of his political vision.
