Gaza Health Authorities Report Fresh Casualties After Latest Israeli Action

GAZA CITY: According to Gazan health officials, 23 individuals were slain in Israeli air strikes on Wednesday. Israel’s military claimed that the strikes were conducted in response to an injury sustained by one of its officers from enemy gunfire.

Violence has persisted in the Gaza Strip, despite the fact that a truce mediated by the United States entered its second phase last month. Israel and Hamas have both accused the other of violating the agreement.

Days after Israel partially reopened the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, the only departure for Gazans that does not pass through Israel, the most recent bloodshed occurred. According to the Gazan health ministry, which is under the authority of Hamas, a series of strikes resulted in the deaths of 21 individuals, including three minors, and the injury of at least 38 others.

The Israeli army claimed that its retaliatory strike was directed at Bilal Abu Assi, the commander of a Hamas platoon, who was responsible for the assault on a kibbutz on October 7, 2023, as part of the attack on Israel that initiated the Gaza conflict. The Israeli military stated that it implemented measures to “minimise harm to civilians to the greatest extent possible” during its most recent operations.
