Inside India’s Vision for an AI-Powered Data City

NEW DELHI: According to the man leading the project, India is constructing a massive new “data city” to drive digital growth on an astounding scale as it competes to catch up to China and the United States in artificial intelligence.

Andhra Pradesh state’s information technology minister, Nara Lokesh, declared, “The AI revolution is here, don’t second-guess it.” The state is establishing Visakhapatnam as a key hub for India’s AI initiative.

Ahead of an international AI forum in New Delhi next week, he stated, “And as a nation… we have taken a stand that we’ve got to embrace it.” According to Lokesh, the state has negotiated $175 billion in investment deals for 760 projects, including a $15 billion Google investment for its biggest AI infrastructure base outside of the US.

Additionally, a joint venture consisting of US company Digital Realty, Canadian company Brookfield, and Indian company Reliance Industries is investing $11 billion to build an AI data center in the same location.

Home to almost two million people, Visakhapatnam, sometimes referred to as “Vizag,” is more well-known for its cricket pitch, which hosts international matches, than for its state-of-the-art technology.
