Saudi Arabia Bans Power Bank Charging on Flights: What Travelers Need to Know

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation regulator has released new guidelines for all airlines using the airports in the Gulf state regarding passengers’ and crew members’ use of electronic devices and portable chargers, or power banks.

The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (SGACA) said that recharging power banks or portable chargers while in flight will be prohibited as part of the new rules. Furthermore, these portable chargers can only be brought inside the aircraft cabin in hand luggage. A maximum of two portable chargers may be carried by each passenger.

The authority has underlined that the SGACA circular complies with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s regulations in a way that improves aviation safety. They may overheat, catch fire, or even explode when subjected to physical or thermal stress. According to Dana Kamal, Director of International Business Development, MENA at NFPA, “these devices can pose a significant fire safety risk in the confined and controlled environment of an aircraft, where factors like cabin pressure, temperature fluctuations, and limited oxygen can impact battery performance.”
