Currently as the Corporate Chief of Projects and Logistics Support, at Hayat National Hospitals, Dr. Al-Ghamdi plays an instrumental role in driving the organization forward. In parallel, he serves as a Member of the Saudi Society of Hematology and the Mother Safety Program of the Saudi Patient Safety Center, sharing his industry insights. Recognized with several honors and accolades, Dr. Essam Saad Al-Ghamdi’s efficient leadership has even earned him the title of Top 10 CEO of Saudi Arabia.

The Beginning

Dr. Essam Saad Al-Ghamdi’s entry into the healthcare sector was not merely a professional choice, but a mission that began the moment he joined medical school. For him, medicine is not a job, but a human responsibility and a continuous commitment to human health and quality of life.

With years of experience in the healthcare sector, combining medical practice with executive leadership, he led health transformation projects, hospital operations, and developed growth and expansion strategies within the Kingdom. He reflects, “My vision always stems from providing high-quality, patient-centered healthcare, while working to build sustainable health systems that keep pace with the aspirations of the healthcare sector and contribute directly to achieving the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.”

A Balanced Approach in the Healthcare Landscape

Dr. Essam Saad Al-Ghamdi’s leadership philosophy in the healthcare sector is based on striking a smart balance between quality of care and operational efficiency, as well as between adopting innovation and ensuring the highest standards of patient safety. He strongly believes that effective decisions must be based on data and analysis, while empowering human resources as they are the most important element in the success of any health system.

He even mentions, “Furthermore, strict corporate governance is not an option, but a necessity to ensure sustainability and achieve outstanding performance. The role of a leader, in my opinion, is not limited to managing details, but rather consists of building a system capable of operating efficiently and independently, and achieving the best results sustainably.”

Driving Transformation in Healthcare

What distinguishes Dr. Essam Saad Al-Ghamdi’s leadership style is the ability to transform strategies from mere plans into tangible results on the ground. Many entities have strong visions and strategies, but the real challenge lies in effective execution, spanning from project approval, through disciplined implementation, to full operation and achieving sustainable impact.

Dr. Al-Ghamdi’s in-depth experience in hospital operations and leading health transformation programs has enabled him to link strategy with execution, and bridge the gap between planning and results, ensuring the realization of true value for the health system.

Envisioning the Future

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia today is leading a health transformation that is considered among the most ambitious and impactful globally, driven by a clear vision and strategic investments within Vision 2030. Dr. Al-Ghamdi explains, “This transformation does not rely on ambition alone, but is supported by tangible numbers and achievements, where government spending on the healthcare sector has exceeded 200 billion riyals annually, health transformation programs have been launched aiming to raise life expectancy to 80

years, and the private sector has expanded to account for more than 60% of total health service provision within the Vision’s targets.

We are also witnessing qualitative progress in adopting modern technologies, including advanced medical centers in the Kingdom that have performed more than 1,000 surgeries using robots annually, while medication errors have been reduced by up to 40% in some smart facilities, and the use of artificial intelligence systems has contributed to improving diagnostic accuracy and significantly reducing waiting times.”

The future of the healthcare sector, Dr. Al-Ghamdi believes, will mainly depend on a variety of factors, from comprehensive digital transformation, development of smart hospitals, employing artificial intelligence in diagnosis and decision support, to enhancing preventive care models.

What distinguishes this transformation is that leaders like Dr. Essam Saad Al-Ghamdi do not merely keep pace with global development, but are pioneers behind building an advanced Saudi model for healthcare that combines quality, efficiency, and sustainability, marching forward to become a global reference in this field.

Navigating through Challenges

Challenges are a part of every sector, and the healthcare industry is not an exception. The most prominent challenges facing the healthcare sector today revolve around three main axes. Alongside developing human resources in line with the speed of transformation, and integrating digital systems to ensure efficiency and continuity of service provision, achieving a delicate balance between quality of care and cost efficiency is another big challenge.

Dr. Al-Ghamdi mentions, “These challenges cannot be dealt with through partial or isolated solutions, but require an integrated system based on effective governance and strategic leadership capable of directing resources and achieving integration between the various elements of the health system.”

Quality Above All Relentless Efforts for Quality Above All

Quality of care and patient safety are not an option or a luxury, but a strict commitment that cannot be compromised under any circumstances. Dr. Essam Saad Al-Ghamdi works to consolidate this commitment and make it a firmly established corporate culture through several approaches. By applying clinical governance uniformly across all services, monitoring performance using accurate and sustainable measurement indicators, and strict adherence to national standards, foremost among them CBAHI standards, he ensures quality over anything.

He states, “Ultimately, we believe that patient safety is not achieved through procedures or policies alone, but through a corporate culture practiced daily in every decision, in every procedure, and at all levels.”

Expanding to New Horizons

Dr. Essam Saad Al-Ghamdi has constantly participated in leading multi-site expansion strategies, whether through horizontal or vertical expansion or by diversifying the scope of services, while ensuring that this expansion is carried out according to well-studied foundations that guarantee the achievement of all success factors. His primary focus has remained the same: ensuring that growth is sustainable and not just rapid growth. To achieve this, he enters new markets based on careful studies, and implements projects in an integrated manner, from the planning stage to actual operation. Dr. Al-Ghamdi even links operational performance with financial and commercial goals to ensure sustainability.

I believe that expansion without a clear structure may generate operational and financial risks, while organized expansion, based on governance and strategic planning, creates real and sustainable value for the health system,” he adds.

Embracing Innovative Solutions

Innovation is the key to growth across sectors.  In healthcare, innovation is not a goal in itself, but a practical means to solve challenges and improve the quality of care. True innovation does not lie in possessing technology, but in its ability to achieve a tangible impact — whether in the patient experience or in operational efficiency. We do not treat technologies — whether artificial intelligence, robots, or digital systems, as tools for display, but as solutions that must deliver real value.

Dr. Al-Ghamdi explains, “We always ask if the technology will add direct value to the patient or will contribute to improving operational efficiency. If the answer is yes, we adopt it and work to employ it effectively. But if it does not achieve this value, we re-evaluate it to ensure optimal use of resources and achieve sustainability.”

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Professionals

Addressing the workers in the healthcare sector, Dr. Essam Saad Al-Ghamdi shares, “Workers in the healthcare sector are the fundamental pillar of any successful system, and they are the first line of defense for community health. My message to them always is that what they do is not just a profession, but a great human mission that requires dedication and responsibility.”

Emphasizing three basic principles, including adherence to quality and perfection in every detail, and keeping pace with change and continuous development in the sector, Dr. Al-Ghamdi even places the patient at the heart of every decision and every procedure.

Leadership in the healthcare sector for him is not a position granted, but a responsibility practiced — and he believes that every individual in this system is a leader in their position.

Building a Patient-centered System

Currently, Dr. Essam Saad Al-Ghamdi’s strategic priority is to build an integrated health system that is patient-centered, relies on digital transformation, and achieves high operational efficiency, thereby supporting the achievement of the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 and ensuring performance sustainability.

And he aims to achieve this based on three main axes, including focusing on the patient as the center of all decisions, accelerating digital transformation, and enhancing the use of modern technologies.
