According to three diplomatic sources, G7 leaders discussed granting “trusted partners” access to advanced AI models from US corporations like Anthropic. This may potentially circumvent limits on non-American use. On Friday, Anthropic stopped all users’ access to its most powerful AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The company took that action after US President Donald Trump directed Anthropic to prevent foreign nationals from using its most advanced AI models, citing national security concerns. According to diplomatic sources, national representatives at the Group of Seven wealthy nations’ annual summit discussed increasing access to powerful AI models with US counterparts.
This was mostly with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on the eve of the inaugural G7 summit dinner on Monday in the French lakeside resort of Evian-les-Bains. The “trusted partners” might be governments or companies, according to a second source who declined to be identified due to current negotiations.
Expanding access to advanced models will enable G7 countries to strengthen their cybersecurity defenses against adversaries like China. A Trump White House official stated that the president’s administration maintains open communication with allies and is committed to tackling national security challenges using Anthropic’s paradigm. AI officials from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google will meet on Wednesday for a working lunch to discuss technical concerns such as regulation, AI infrastructure, and networks, according to Reuters.
