Marco Rubio Warns Against Shipping Tolls in the Strait of Hormuz

ABU DHABI: On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in the United Arab Emirates and said that no nation will be permitted to charge tolls or fees on the Strait of Hormuz. After arriving in Abu Dhabi at the beginning of a tour of Gulf nations, he declared, “It’s an international waterway.” “No nation may impose fines or tolls on an international waterway. That is current international law.

Despite the US and Iran agreeing to establish communication channels to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, Tehran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, had previously maintained that it “will never return” to the pre-war state of affairs.

Since Washington and Tehran signed a tentative agreement last week to stop the conflict, Rubio is the first senior US official to visit the Gulf. Kuwait is another stop on the visit, and on Thursday he will travel to Bahrain to attend a Gulf Cooperation Council conference. According to the US State Department, Rubio will discuss the deal with Iran, as well as initiatives to ensure free passage through the Strait of Hormuz and to promote regional peace and stability.
