JEDDAH: Taibah University researchers have filed two new creative technologies: an enhanced dental implant system and a low-cost organic solar cell that also serves as a self-powered infrared sensor, the Saudi Press Agency said on Thursday.
The dental implant, for which the university has registered an industrial design, includes an implant abutment with an internal locking mechanism that eliminates the requirement for a traditional fixation screw. It was created by student Jumana Al-Rashidi in conjunction with Dr. Shadia El-Sayed.
The design seeks to better mimic the natural movement of teeth during chewing while also increasing the long-term function of dental implants. Unlike traditional methods, the design maintains high stability while allowing regulated flexibility, mimicking the function of the tooth’s natural periodontal ligament.
The mechanism distributes chewing forces more evenly, minimizing stress on the surrounding bone and increasing the implant’s durability and efficiency over time. The university’s research team has also secured a patent for producing a low-cost organic solar cell that can generate power while also acting as an infrared sensor.
