CARACAS: As rescue efforts progressively turned from locating survivors to retrieving dead from the debris, Interim President Delcy Rodriguez said on Thursday that the death toll from Venezuela’s twin earthquakes has increased to 2,595. Despite the fact that thousands of individuals were still listed as missing after the June 24 tragedy, Rodriguez informed a press conference there were no plans for mass graves.
The earthquakes, which destroyed much of the coastal state of La Guaira and injured over 11,000 people, she added, had entirely destroyed 189 buildings. According to Rodriguez, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have extended finance and assistance to help Venezuela’s recovery. She noted that Venezuela was establishing a $200 million rehabilitation fund with the IMF, with the money designated for contractors reconstructing homes wrecked by the earthquakes.
The interim president also stated revenue from Venezuela’s oil output, which is under US Treasury control following the overthrow of former President Nicolas Maduro, would be made available for reconstruction and humanitarian relief. The United States has pledged more than $300 million and deployed roughly 900 military personnel to bolster rescue and relief operations.
