Why Saudi Arabia’s Exclusive Green Hydrogen Export Mandate Is a Global Energy Milestone

Why Saudi Arabia’s Exclusive Green Hydrogen Export Mandate Is a Global Energy Milestone

RIYADH: The Saudi utility behemoth Acwa has been granted an exclusive government mandate to export green hydrogen and its derivatives—such as green fuels, green ammonia, and green methanol—to foreign markets.

According to a statement from Acwa, the mandate places the business in a crucial position to further Saudi Arabia’s plan to lead the world in renewable energy exports. The Kingdom’s strategic goal of becoming a global leader in clean energy exports and quickening the growth of a diverse, low-carbon economy under Vision 2030 is supported by the government’s permission.

The Kingdom hopes to become a major producer and exporter of green hydrogen through Neom Green Hydrogen Co., which is at the center of this ambition. By the end of 2026, the company—a joint venture between Acwa, Neom, and Air Products—is anticipated to generate up to 600 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen daily.

“This government approval reflects the Kingdom’s confidence in Acwa’s ability to deliver strategic infrastructure at scale and reinforces our responsibility to help position Saudi Arabia as a leading global exporter of clean energy,” stated Samir Serhan, CEO of Acwa.
