MADRID: Following multiple wildfires that were out of control, Spain declared a national emergency late on Thursday in the Madrid region and in the province of Avila, which is close to the capital.
The interior ministry announced the action, which aims to expedite the deployment of resources to combat the fires that have forced 10,000 people to evacuate in the Madrid region. It also assigns a military emergency unit to handle the problem.
Over 10,000 people have been evacuated in recent days from the Madrid region, where multiple forest fires are raging at the same time. 3,500 residents of Aldea de Fresno, which is roughly 60 kilometers (38 miles) from Madrid, received evacuation orders from Spanish authorities early on Thursday.
According to Spanish media reports, residents of the municipalities of Burgohondo, El Tiemblo, and Navaluenga have been told to stay inside as the fire that started on Thursday in Avila is getting out of control. Additionally, because to the fires’ quick spread, 1,500 people were evacuated from a housing development and a rural tourism complex in El Tiemblo, according to the El Pais newspaper.
