CHICAGO: In Michigan’s fiercely contested Democratic US Senate primary on Wednesday, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens to win the party’s nominee and move on to face Republican former congressman Mike Rogers in the general election on November 3.
El-Sayed celebrated on X after over 99 percent of the ballots were counted: “We won.” Being your Democratic nominee for the US Senate makes me incredibly proud. Let’s triumph in November. With hundreds of thousands of votes left uncounted, El-Sayed now led Stevens by a narrow lead after about 95% of the votes had been tabulated.
In the general election on November 3, the chosen Democratic nominee will take on former Republican congressman Mike Rogers. In the Republican primary on Tuesday, Rogers faced no opposition. Because the outcome of the campaign could determine which party controls the US Senate, it is anticipated to garner national attention.
In their remarks on election night, El-Sayed and Stevens acknowledged that a definitive outcome might take several more hours rather than declaring victory. Additionally, both emphasized that in order to keep the seat that retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters is leaving open, Democrats must unite behind the eventual nominee.
