TEHRAN: In an attempt to increase the cost of military action by endangering Washington’s closest regional allies, Iran has warned Gulf governments that any new US attack on its territory will result in retaliation against vital energy infrastructure throughout the region, according to five sources.
Following President Donald Trump’s July 28 threat to attack Iran’s energy network and infrastructure, the warning was issued through a flurry of high-level diplomatic contacts, according to the sources. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reportedly spoke with his Saudi, Turkish, and Qatari counterparts as well as Pakistan’s army leader, according to two senior Iranian officials, two Gulf sources, and a senior regional diplomat with knowledge of the talks. Due to the delicate nature of the subject, everyone talked under the condition of anonymity.
The senior diplomat warned that any assault on Iran will result in retaliation against US assets and oil facilities throughout the Gulf. Araqchi asked Washington’s Gulf allies to use their influence with Trump to deter him from launching new strikes. We’re ready to retaliate, but finding a diplomatic solution is the best way to avoid wider escalation and destruction across the region,” the ambassador stated in every conversation.
