The UK Has Billion-Dollar Agreements With Businesses Connected to Israeli Settlements in The West Bank

LONDON — According to a new research released on Friday, at least 17 businesses connected to illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank have contracts with the UK public sector valued at over 2.1 billion pounds ($2.85 billion).

More than 140 UK Labour MPs are urging the government to outlaw trade with illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank a step Prime Minister Andy Burnham is contemplating, according to the results of an Al Jazeera investigation.

Divisions within the ruling Labour Party have widened as a result of Burnham’s intentions to impose harsher sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Additionally, supporters are getting ready to present a motion at Labour’s annual conference the following month. In order to keep the matter from overshadowing his first party conference as leader, Burnham is anticipated to make his stance known prior to the event.

However, Labour Friends of Israel cautioned that the policy might turn into a de facto boycott of Israel because it would be “practically impossible” to separate settlement items from other Israeli commodities. Stephen Humphreys, a professor of international law at the London School of Economics, told Al Jazeera, “There is mounting evidence that the UK may be in violation of its international obligations by continuing to contract with entities identified by the UN as providing assistance of this sort.
