Before the Federal Aviation Administration fixed a telecommunications issue late in the afternoon, thousands of aircraft throughout the United States were delayed on Monday, September 21. Incoming flights were stopped for hours at key East Coast airports.
The problem began at 9.45 a.m. (5.45 p.m. UAE time) when employees in New Jersey unintentionally severed an FAA communication line. On the day that 130 world leaders and dozens of ministers were travelling to New York for the annual high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, this resulted in a halt to incoming planes at key airports.
In addition to Philadelphia, Boston, and two minor airports in the New York region, the FAA halted arrivals at all three of the major airports in the region. It took eight hours to solve the issues completely. Late in the afternoon, Transport Secretary Sean Duffy said on X that telecom links had been fixed and regular operations were returning throughout the Northeast. He advised travellers to check the status of the aircraft they were waiting for and stated that it would take time to address current delays.
About 7,000 flights were cancelled or delayed, including 1,400 at the three main airports in the New York region, according to FlightAware, a flight-tracking service. At Newark, a major hub for United Airlines, over half of all flights were cancelled. In order to assist affected travellers, United said it granted a travel waiver.
