NEW YORK: Earlier this month, President Donald Trump warned voters that democratic socialists, extreme, crazed lunatics, he called them, were threatening to turn America into “a communist country.”This week, a smiling Trump patted one of the nation’s best-recognized democratic socialists on the shoulder, shook his hand, and told him he was “off to a start” to being a terrific mayor of the country’s largest city.
People across the political spectrum have been scratching their heads about Trump’s chummy relationship with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani since last year. But as midterms loom, Republicans are getting annoyed by the unlikely bromance, which undercuts the party’s messaging about Democratic radicalism.
Veteran Republican strategist Doug Heye said, “You’re trying to say, ‘Here’s how extreme they are,’ and the president’s saying, ‘I love this guy. It doesn’t help. It is hard to overestimate the degree to which Republicans are laser-focused on the emergence of democratic socialism in the midterms. With the party hobbled by Trump’s low approval ratings on just about every major issue the economy and the war in Iran chief among them Republicans from Georgia and Texas to New York and Michigan are trying to scare voters away from Democratic candidates by warning that the party is controlled by far-left extremists.
