Officials in The United States Have Made an Arrest in Relation to a School Shooting in Canada

Authorities in the United States detained a man in the state of Washington on Tuesday on charges that he offered guidance and offered to live broadcast a mass shooting that occurred in Canada last year. The Department of Justice said that 30-year-old James Cody Bryant was taken into custody in relation to the shooting at Tumbler Ridge on charges of international conspiracy to kill. A maximum sentence of life in jail is possible for this offence.

Officials from the criminal enforcement agency stated that Bryant had multiple communications with the shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, providing him with technical guidance, funding the attack (including the purchase of the shoes), and even agreed to broadcast the incident live.

According to Acting US Attorney for the Western District of Washington Neil Floyd, “James Cody Bryant had the information and ability to alert law enforcement and even discussed that possibility with the shooter, but he chose not to, and he encouraged and offered assistance to a murderer.”

No attorney representing Bryant was found in the court documents upon initial review. One of the worst mass shootings in Canadian history, the school massacre in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, murdered nine people, most of them were children.

The 18-year-old van Rootselaar, who had a history of mental health issues, allegedly murdered her mother and stepbrother at their house in Tumbler Ridge, a small Canadian Rockies hamlet of around 2,400 people. At her former school, she also shot and killed five kids. According to the authorities, Van Rootselaar, who identified as a woman after coming out as a guy, committed suicide.
