Four Out of Every Five Immigrants Deported Under Trump 2.0 Have no Criminal Record, According to a Report

RIYADH: Only 20 percent of the 980,000 migrants deported during the first 18 months of US President Donald Trump’s second term had a criminal conviction, according to a research released on Thursday by the Migration Policy Institute think tank.

The analysis, written by Marc Rosenblum, a former chief of the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Homeland Security Statistics, is one of the most thorough appraisals of immigration enforcement during Trump’s second term.

According to the research, the US Department of Homeland Security, through Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), deported about 980,000 people between January 20, 2025 and July 31, 2026.

Only over 190,000 of those deported had criminal convictions, despite Trump’s repeated promises to target “the worst of the worst” criminals in the United States. According to the research, those with no criminal records accounted for 80 percent of all deportations during that time period.

Among immigrants who had lived in the United States for two years or longer, 71% of those deported had no criminal record. The tendency also extended to long-term residents, with 61 percent of deportees who had been in the nation for ten years or more having no criminal record.
