UNITED NATIONS: The US will boycott a United Nations tribute to Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash earlier this month, according to a US official.
The 193-member United Nations General Assembly traditionally convenes to pay tribute to any world leader sitting head of state at the time of death. The tribute will include speeches about Raisi.
“We won’t attend this event in any capacity,” a US official told Reuters on the condition of anonymity. The US boycott had not previously been reported. The Iranian mission to the United Nations in New York declined to comment.
The United Nations should support the Iranian people rather than commemorate their decades-long oppressor, according to the US official. “Raisi was involved in numerous, horrific human rights abuses, including the extrajudicial killings of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.
Some of the worst human rights abuses on record, especially against the women and girls of Iran, took place during his tenure,” according to the official. Some Republican members of Congress strongly criticized US President Joe Biden’s administration for offering condolences to Iran.
