A Hamas Official Denies the "Illusion" that a Gaze Truce is Imminent

Following talks in the Gulf emirate of Qatar, US President Joe Biden expressed optimism that a Gaza truce was getting closer, but a top Hamas leader on Saturday denied this claim.

According to Hamas political bureau member Sami Abu Zuhri, “to say that we are getting close to a deal is an illusion.” He stated this to AFP. “We are facing the imposition of American diktats, not a deal or real negotiations.”

In response to Biden’s Friday statement, “We are closer than we have ever been,” he made this statement.

Following two days of negotiations in Qatar, when Washington attempted to reconcile Israel and Palestinian Hamas fighters, Biden made his remarks. In the Gaza Strip, the two sides have been engaged in combat for more than ten months.

Earlier hope during months of intermittent peace negotiations has thus far shown to be fruitless.

However, with the swift assassinations of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh and Fuad Shukr, the top operations chief of Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah movement, in late July, the stakes have increased dramatically.

Hezbollah, Iran, and other groups supported by Tehran in the region vowed to exact revenge on Israel for their killings.
