Australia, India, Japan, and US Deepen Economic Ties with Critical Minerals Pact

Australia, India, Japan, and US Deepen Economic Ties with Critical Minerals Pact

In an effort to breathe new life into their alliance known as the Quad, the foreign ministers of Australia, India, Japan, and the United States inked agreements pertaining to vital minerals and energy security and decided to cooperatively construct a port in Fiji. The Quad’s top diplomats Australia’s Penny Wong, India’s S. Jaishankar, Japan’s Toshimitsu Motegi, and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio—met briefly for the third time since September 2024.

Tensions between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Washington’s tariffs and other issues caused the four-nation group to lose some of its momentum last year after failing to attend a leaders’ summit.

We are starting to demonstrate genuine successes,” Rubio remarked. “We have a strong commitment to this collaboration. The committee decided to start an initiative on Indo-Pacific Energy Security and a vital minerals framework, he added. “It is a linchpin and a cornerstone of our global strategy as a nation in the United States.”

Trump’s visit to India, likely linked to a Quad summit, has been pushed by New Delhi. Analysts have questioned whether the Quad’s significance has been diminished due to a lack of engagement at the leader level.
