Due to volcanic ash interfering with operations at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Qatar Airways had to cancel four flights between Doha and Jakarta on September 7. According to an airline statement on X, the impacted flights are QR954, QR955, QR956, and QR957. Before heading to the airport, travellers are encouraged to verify the status of their most recent flight.
The cancellations follow Indonesia’s suspension of operations at six airports in response to Anak Krakatoa’s eruption, which caused flights at the nation’s main international airport outside of Jakarta to be disrupted after ash from the volcano, which is more than 150 kilometres away, reached the area.
Additionally, Emirates has experienced issues with its route from Dubai to Jakarta. Due to the temporary closure of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport due to volcanic ash, the airline reported that flights between Dubai and Jakarta on September 5 and 6 were either cancelled or delayed.
On Saturday, September 5, Mount Anak Krakatoa erupted, creating booming noises and a lava fountain that could be heard up to 700 km distant. Because volcanic ash may harm jet engines and reduce visibility, it poses a significant risk to aircraft. As a precaution, airlines usually halt operations at impacted airports until circumstances are deemed safe.
