Heavy Rain Strikes Mogadishu, killing Seven People

MOGADISHU: Heavy rains caused flooding in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, on Friday night, killing at least seven people and cutting off major roadways due to an overburdened drainage system and a rising urban population. Abdinasir Hirsi Idle, a spokeswoman for the regional government, stated on Saturday that rescue attempts were underway.

“The death toll could rise because the rains were heavy and lasted for several hours, causing nine houses to collapse across different neighbourhoods, and at least six major roads to suffer severe damage,” he informed us.

In the past, Somalia has experienced severe climatic shocks, such as protracted dry seasons that have led to drought and intense rains that have produced floods. The eight-hour rainstorm on Friday left neighbourhoods with waist-high water, trapping some inhabitants and forcing others to evacuate to higher ground.

Mohammed Hassan, a local, reported that several elderly individuals were still confined. He remarked, “I haven’t even eaten breakfast, and we shivered from the cold while spending the night on rooftops. Important infrastructure was also destroyed by floodwaters, which briefly interrupted operations at the main airport, Aden Abdulle International Airport, and stopped public transportation.
