Google is doubling down on AI-powered smartphones with the release of Gemini Intelligence for Android, a new system to make your ordinary phone use faster, smarter and a lot less repetitive. Unveiled at the Android Show, Gemini Intelligence integrates Google’s Gemini AI models with the Android OS itself, giving the system the ability to automate tasks across apps, understand what’s happening on your screen, and even create widgets from basic natural language cues.
The major feature is the multi-step task automation. Gemini can do things for you instead of moving between apps manually. Users may ask Gemini to search Gmail for a class syllabus, see what books they need, and then automatically add those books to a shopping cart, Google adds. The AI can also book gym classes or do other mundane chores, while still keeping the user in control until final approval.
Google is also extending Gemini’s knowledge of screen context. You can push and hold the power button and have Gemini do something based on what’s on the screen. For instance, Gemini can automatically convert a grocery list into an online delivery order. In another instance, the AI analysed a photo from a vacation brochure and searched online for similar tour packages.
