Microsoft Chief Set to Testify Over His Role in OpenAI’s Early Days

OAKLAND, California: Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, is scheduled to testify on Monday in Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI. He will discuss emails that showed how his business financed the ChatGPT creator’s transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit AI behemoth.

Nadella’s evidence will come before that of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, whose interrogation, which is expected to take place on Tuesday or Wednesday, will be one of the last phases of a highly anticipated trial before a federal jury in Oakland, California.

In the years preceding the high-profile debut of the ChatGPT chatbot in 2022, a group of top Silicon Valley engineers, investors, and executives experienced internal conflict, which has been exposed by the trial.

Musk claims in his lawsuit that OpenAI misappropriated his founding donations totaling $38 million in order to construct an enterprise worth over $850 billion and betrayed its original charitable objective.

The founder of SpaceX and Tesla is advocating for OpenAI to return to its original nonprofit status, which would affect the company’s standing in the worldwide race for artificial intelligence against Google, Anthropic, and China’s Deepseek.
