To the Hamas Ceasefire Agreement, Netanyahu Added Demands: New York Times

According to The New York Times, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has quietly added more requirements to his nation’s proposed ceasefire agreement with Hamas.

Israeli negotiators worry that these new demands may make it impossible to strike a peace agreement.

For weeks now, the Israeli prime minister has refuted allegations that he is attempting to sabotage an agreement by imposing further requirements.

Despite criticism from Israeli security authorities, Netanyahu continued to attribute the impasse in the talks process to Hamas officials.

Israel demanded fresh ceasefire terms from US, Egyptian, and Qatari mediators in late July, according to unpublished papers obtained by The fresh York Times. It changed the earlier requests Israel had made in late May.

One of the more controversial demands made by Israel was to assume control of the Philadelphi Corridor, which is Gaza’s southern border with Egypt, once the combat has stopped.

The Israeli requirements that were put up in May did not include that suggestion.

According to the newspaper, Netanyahu “has been extensive” in his backroom efforts to make the modifications.
