MOSCOW: According to the Kremlin, President Vladimir Putin informed US President Donald Trump that he was prepared to utilise Russia’s close ties with Iran to facilitate talks over Iran’s nuclear program.
Following a phone conversation with Putin, Trump stated that he thought Putin agreed that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons and that Iran has a limited amount of time to decide on its nuclear program. Trump claims that despite Iran’s “slow walking,” Putin recommended that he join the talks with Iran and that “he could, perhaps, help get this brought to a rapid conclusion.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, stated on Thursday that “We have close partner relations with Tehran, and, naturally, President Putin said that we are ready to use this level of partnership with Tehran to facilitate and contribute to the negotiations that are taking place to resolve the issue of the Iranian nuclear dossier.”
When asked when Putin may participate in the talks, Peskov replied that talks with Washington and Tehran were still ongoing through a number of channels. When needed, the president will be allowed to intervene, Peskov stated.
